Kim Kardashian Hired a Surrogate to Carry Her Third Child

Kim Kardashian Hired a SurrogateIn a teaser for Season 14 of Keeping Up with the Kardashians, Kim Kardashian announces that she and husband Kanye West are expecting a third child early next year. The child is being carried by a surrogate because Kim has been told by multiple doctors that it would be very dangerous for her to carry another pregnancy. Kardashian and West are already parents to daughter North, age 4, and son Saint, age 1, both of whom Kardashian was able to carry.

During both of her pregnancies, however, Kardashian experienced placenta accreta, where the placenta has grown into the uterine wall doesn’t detach after the baby is delivered. This is a fairly rare (3 in 1,000 births), but dangerous, condition that often requires a Cesarean section so the placenta can be removed surgically.

During her first pregnancy Kardashian didn’t realize she had placenta accreta and described on her website in 2013 how her doctor removed the placenta: “My doctor had to stick his entire arm in me and detach the placenta with his hand, scraping it away from my uterus with his fingernails.”

Kardashian has been considering surrogacy for some time but was initially hesitant because she feels some of the strong bond she has with her children is because she carried them. After talking to a woman on an episode of the show who had carried one of her children and had the other carried by a surrogate, Kardashian felt like she and West would be able to love this third child as much as their first two.

Kardashian and West reportedly used a surrogacy agency to locate a surrogate for them. A surrogacy agency is the best option when not using someone you know personally because the surrogates are medically certified before they are ever introduced to intended parents. The agencies also have all the contracts and paperwork in place so there are no misunderstandings. Kardashian plans on being actively involved in the pregnancy and the whole Kardashian clan is looking forward to welcoming their newest member.
