6 QUESTIONS THAT REVEAL HOW AN EGG BANK ACTUALLY OPERATES

Not every egg bank operates to the same standard. Some questions uncover this quickly. Below are the six questions our physicians recommend asking, including several that most intended parents don’t think to raise until it’s too late.

1. What is your frozen egg survival rate per thaw, specifically?

This is the single most important clinical metric. If an egg bank cannot give you a direct number, that tells you something. A bank that tracks outcomes rigorously will know this figure. The industry average is approximately 80–85%. Ask what theirs is.

2. Does the egg bank coordinate with my IVF clinic, or do I handle that separately?

Coordination between the egg bank and your IVF clinic affects timing, logistics, and what happens if complications arise. Understanding who manages this — and how — prevents surprises mid-cycle.

3. What percentage of egg donor applicants are accepted into your program?

Acceptance rate is a proxy for screening rigor. A program that accepts most applicants is not screening as carefully as one that accepts fewer than 2%. Ask the number directly.

4. What happens if no viable embryos result from my cohort?

This question separates banks with formal guarantee programs from those that don't have one. Understanding what recourse you have before you commit protects you from an outcome no one plans for, but everyone should prepare for.

5. What are the complete all-in costs, and are any fees not included in the quote?

Quoted costs and actual costs can diverge significantly. Ask specifically: what is not included in this number? Shipping, genetic testing, cycle medications, and storage fees are common additions. You need the full picture before committing.

6. How do I find the egg donor that is the closest match for my family?

Some egg banks offer AI-assisted matching tools that search against your criteria across the full donor gallery. Ask what tools the bank offers and whether you can rerun a search as new egg donors are added.
